Lighting & darkness design
We design light and darkness with close consideration for the well-being and safety of animals, plants, and humans, knowing that natural darkness is as important for people’s health and functioning ecosystems as natural light.
Our award-winning lighting & darkness designs constantly set new standards for the illumination of our parks, public spaces, and cities.
In close interdisciplinary collaboration with our designers, anthropologists, and biologists, our lighting designers strive to create the best possible places for safe, joyful, and healthy stay, play, and movement – at all times of day and night.
The natural cycle of light and darkness
With inspiration from the natural cycle of light and darkness, our lighting designs focus on shadows and the graduation of light and darkness.
Our aim is to have low light levels in the nocturnal landscape that enable the human eyes to adapt to night vision, giving better visibility and enhancing safety at night while also preserving the view of the night sky.
All our designs work with the poetic interplay between light, shadow, and material, and how the surrounding materials reflect, absorb, or transmit light and thereby transform the nocturnal landscape.
An interdisciplinary design process
Our approach to lighting and darkness design is intrinsically interdisciplinary, drawing on the input and knowledge of our studio’s designers, anthropologists, and biologists.
Working with the latest technical equipment, we thoroughly measure the existing light levels in specific sites and add only the light that is needed – using simulations, light calculations, and mockups to ensure the best possible effect.
The results are always the best possible places for safe, joyful, and healthy stay, play, and movement – at all times of day and night.
