The Wuxi International Conference Center is envisioned to play a central role in the development of Taihu New Town, linking Wuxi’s historic center with the expansive Taihu Lake.

Renowned for its water and wetlands, the ancient city of Wuxi has a dynamic relationship between land and water. SLA’s masterplan proposal and landscape design builds on this legacy – enhancing the area’s wetland character while increasing biodiversity and strengthening ecological connections for the region’s flora and fauna.

Through a nature-based approach, we created a sensuous landscape for conference-goers, visitors, and local residents alike.

A gateway to nature The guests of the conference center and hotel have easy access to the vast wetland park – whether to admire it from indoors or to explore it with all their senses.
Spanning 120,000m², the conference center features large exhibition halls, a 1,600-seat auditorium, and various conference facilities. The complex, designed by Henning Larsen Architects, also includes two hotels, an office tower, and retail buildings.
Nature-based resilience against flood The spaces around the canal are designed to adapt to fluctuating water levels. The solution provides protection and diverse nature experiences for visitors.

Flood protection and water access
The wetland park integrates a dynamic water landscape where the spaces around the canal adapt to fluctuating water levels. The solution provides flood protection and diverse nature experiences for visitors, while integrated water features serve as a system for rainwater collection and reuse, contributing to an ecological sponge city.

Drawing inspiration from Wuxi’s traditional landscapes and garden aesthetics, our masterplan proposal takes conceptual cues from Chinese ink-wash paintings. With extended water bodies, wooden boardwalks, platforms, and descending water steps, we enhance water access and connectivity throughout the site.

Supporting local biodiversity The design's three wetland habitats and planting zones are inspired by the native nature of the Taihu Lake area.

Distinct planting zones
The wetland park has three planting zones inspired by the Taihu Lake area: Aquatic plants (including submerged, floating, and emergent species), wetland plants and
terrestrial plants. The selected species are local and non-invasive, carefully chosen to strengthen biodiversity and nature-based resilience.

By weaving water, nature, and biodiversity into the design, the project creates a dynamic, resilient, and locally rooted landscape for visitors to enjoy. The Wuxi International Conference Center not only strengthens the city’s wetland heritage but also enhances Taihu New Town’s connection to the beautiful Shangxian Lake Wetland Park and Taihu Lake – ensuring a continued synergy between Wuxi and its water.
