Al Masar Park

Al Masar Park is a new type of linear sports park in Abu Dhabi that adds numerous assets to the community and the city.

By combining advanced microclimate solutions with people-centered and nature-based design, Al Masar Park will act as an 800-meter-long urban connector that increases the everyday life quality in Abu Dhabi through three core values: Outdoor well-being, Community, and Nature – all encouraging healthy lifestyle through offering the best conditions for active use and socializing, as well as places to rest the mind in nature.

The design of Al Masar Park has a strong focus on topography. The topography is inspired by the region’s natural windblown terrain. The park is formed to allow and enhance the cooling North-West wind into the park, cooling the site and improving the micro-climate for visitors and users.

The activities found in the park are inspired by – and encourage – a social, active lifestyle linked to the local culture. The active spaces are surrounded by nature, creating a feeling of being immersed in nature and protected from the prevalent traffic and noise from the adjacent streets.

Al Masar Park offers activities and experiences for all user groups: From challenging sports activities for different age groups and genders to more relaxed and quiet activities as well as bigger social events and festivals. The different programs are organized, so many different activities can happen at the same time without disturbing other programs.

The park is specially designed to promote running and biking through a 2-kilometer-long running and biking loop. The loop runs through the whole park, up and down the hilly terrain, through relaxed nature areas as well as active sports areas.

The nature design is made up of local plants and hydro zoning to meet the climatic conditions of the site and to reduce irrigation demands as much as possible. A diverse planting scheme creates diversity in densities, openness, height, scent, and color, which creates different identities for each activity zone using the same simple plant toolbox.

By surrounding the park’s active spaces with lush, local nature, the park design supports the local biodiversity while improving the microclimate for its users making the park usable and inviting in all seasons. And thus create the best possible place for Abu Dhabi life in all its form.
