MONROE BLOCKS

SLA’s landscape design for Monroe Blocks adds nature, human scale and new urban spaces to the major mixed-used development that transforms the heart of Detroit. Monroe Blocks combines high-rise with low-rise residential units, green roof top terraces, pedestrian walkways and plazas. SLA’s series of new urban spaces reestablish the historic alleyways and bind together the city center while closely connecting the public realm both indoors and outdoors. A new, native vegetationemphasizes each of the urban spaces’ unique identities and characters while adding human scale, social values and a local identity - creating a greener, cleaner and more pleasant urban environment for a vibrant contemporary city life.

“We are very excited to bring our nature-based design to Motor City. With our design, downtown Detroit will receive a new, green boost: Native vegetation will emphasize the urban spaces’ unique identities while adding human scale, social values and functional ecosystem services to central Detroit - creating a greener, cleaner and more pleasant urban environment for a vibrant contemporary city life”, says SLA partner Rasmus Astrup.
