Monroe Blocks

SLA’s landscape design for Monroe Blocks adds nature, human scale and new urban spaces to the major mixed-used development that transforms the heart of Detroit. Monroe Blocks combines high-rise with low-rise residential units, green roof top terraces, pedestrian walkways and plazas. SLA’s series of new urban spaces re-establish the historic alleyways and bind together the city centre while closely connecting the public realm both indoors and outdoors. A new, native vegetation emphasizes each of the urban spaces’ unique identities and characters while adding human scale, social values and a local identity - creating a greener, cleaner and more pleasant urban environment for a vibrant contemporary city life.

“We are very excited to bring our nature-based design to Motor City. With our design, downtown Detroit will receive a new, green boost: Native vegetation will emphasize the urban spaces’ unique identities while adding human scale, social values and functional ecosystem services to central Detroit - creating a greener, cleaner and more pleasant urban environment for a vibrant contemporary city life”, says SLA partner Rasmus Astrup.
